What is Hyperhidrosis?
To understand how to treat hyperhidrosis, it helps to know how the body handles sweat production. The primary structures responsible are the eccrine glands, which are found across the entire body, but are most concentrated on the palms, soles, and underarms. These glands respond to nerve impulses by forcing the glands to produce sweat through the skin.
With focal hyperhidrosis, the nervous system triggers the body’s glands to produce more sweat than is needed for maintaining body temperature. The injectable treatment works by temporarily interrupting the chemical message sent from the nerve endings to the glands in the affected area. This stops them from producing sweat, offering significant, long-lasting relief from the symptoms.
Primary Hyperhidrosis is the most common form, typically manifesting as focal hyperhidrosis. It starts in childhood or adolescence and usually affects specific areas like the underarms, hands, or feet. The cause is often genetic and does not involve an underlying medical condition. Secondary Hyperhidrosis develops later in life and is often a side effect or symptom of another medical condition. Causes can include hormonal changes, metabolic issues like low blood sugar, or certain medications prescribed for conditions like high blood pressure.
